Toyota Safety Sense: safety at no extra charge

It was last October that Toyota unveiled its new Toyota Safety Sense system, a suite of active safety technologies designed to improve the safety of Toyota owners as well as other vehicles on the road. These systems not only warn the driver of a potential accident, they can also intervene if needed to prevent a collision.

Now, most automakers offer these types of systems, but Toyota decided to do things a little differently by offering these technologies as standard equipment on 90 % of its best-selling vehicles. In doing so, Toyota showed the industry that safety should not come at an additional cost, and in the process gave its vehicles a major advantage over their competition.

“Advanced safety systems are typically included only on luxury vehicles – but we feel they’re so important that everybody deserves to benefit from them. That’s why we’re democratizing advanced safety technologies – and will be including them on almost every model we produce,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “At the same time, we’re introducing a comprehensive awareness and education campaign to help Canadian drivers understand these systems and experience them first-hand.”

There are two Toyota Safety Systems available in the Toyota lineup, Toyota Safety Sense C and Toyota Safety Sense P.

Toyota Safety Sense C

Available on: Toyota Yaris Hatchback, Toyota Prius C and Toyota Corolla iM.

Systems:

  • Pre-Collision System
  • Lane Departure Alert
  • Automatic High Beams

The systems found in the Toyota Safety Sense C suite keep an eye one what is going in front of your vehicle as well as its trajectory. In other words, pre-collision warning can warn you if there is a vehicle ahead, and the system can even apply the brakes if needed to avoid an accident. Lane departure alert will also warn the driver, this time if the vehicle is about to go over the lane.

The automatic high beams system allows you to keep your high beams on for added visibility at night without having to switch them off when another car is approaching as the system will automatically turn on the low beams.

Toyota Safety Sense P

Available on: Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius, Toyota Prius Prime, Toyota RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid, Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.

Systems:

  • Pre-Collision System with pedestrian detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

The main addition to Toyota Safety Sense P is the dynamic radar cruise control which keeps a pre-determined distance between you and the vehicle ahead when cruise control is activated. Moreover, the pre-collision warning system can detect and brake for pedestrians, and the lane departure warning can now automatically keep you in your lane thanks to steering assist.
