Toyota had a lot going on at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show which opened this week. First, the Japanese automaker unveiled the brand-new Corolla and its first-ever hybrid variant, then turned right around and introduced the brand new 2019 Toyota Prius Hybrid.
The Prius itself hasn’t changed all that much. What has changed, however, is that it is now offered with Toyota’s AWD-e all-wheel drive system. In other words, the Prius becomes the only vehicle in its segment of feature all-wheel drive, and one of the few hybrids to offer it on the market.
With the new Toyota Prius AWD-e, you’ll be able to enjoy Toyota’s remarkable fuel economy regardless of the road conditions ahead.
Minimal fuel consumption penalty
Often times, fuel economy suffers when a vehicle adds all-wheel drive capability because of the added weight of the battery and the hybrid components. The AWD-e system is different. It’s a lot lighter and a lot more compact than most hybrid systems, and therefore doesn’t result in a dramatic increase in fuel consumption.
As a matter of fact, the 2019 Toyota Prius AWD-e has an average fuel economy rating of just 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers in the city, and 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway.
Engaged when needed from 0 to 70 km/h, the Prius’ AWD-e system detects when the rear wheels need added grip or when the front is slipping. Power is then sent to the rear axle to make sure the vehicle remains stable, and also to make it easier to get away from a slippery surface.
Because of the system’s compact weight and dimensions, AWD-e doesn’t impact cargo space any more than it impacts fuel economy. The AWD Prius will offer 1,855 liters of cargo space to its owners.
Aside from the added safety of AWD, the 2019 Prius will also offer Toyota Safety Sense P as standard equipment. The latter includes unique features such as Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/ PD), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).
