2018 Toyota Camry gets a complete makeover in Detroit

Published on January 31 2017

The 2018 Toyota Camry was not only one of the stars of this year’s North American International Auto Show, but it was also proof that Toyota was done building cars that people considered boring. Let’s set the record straight, the Toyota Camry is the best-selling vehicle in its segment and one of the most popular in North America. That ultimately means that it has a lot to offer and does a lot of things right. On the other hand, buyers looking for a more dynamic drive may be left wanting more. Not so with the new 2018 Toyota Camry.

A new design for the 2018 Toyota Camry

The first thing Toyota did when redesigning was Camry was give it a more dynamic and sporty look that is now sharper, wider, and lower. The new Camry is also the first to offer available two-tone paint. The 2018 Camry will be available in five trims that include two sportier versions like with the current generation, the SE and the XSE.

These two versions receive more aggressive front and rear bumpers, a mesh grill, rear lip spoiler, rear diffuser and rocker panels. The XSE also features 19-inch black wheels that certainly stand out. The other three available grades will be L, LE, and XLE, and the Camry will also continue to offer a hybrid version as well.

Inside the 2018 Toyota Camry, owners will get a completely redesigned dashboard, center console and overall interior layout. The entire interior is focused on the driver in order to create a sporty environment that is also practical and easy to use. New materials throughout the interior add an extra level of refinement to the new Camry.

The new Camry won’t only look more dynamic, it actually will be thanks to Toyota’s New Global Architecture on which the new Camry is built. Toyota’s TNGA will serve as the starting point for many if not all upcoming Toyota models, and will result in cars that are more dynamic and fun to drive. The new 2018 Toyota Camry sits on a wheelbase that has increased by approximately two engines, but overall height is lower which means the Camry’s center of gravity is also lower and that translates into a more dynamic and agile drive.

All-new engines and safety features for the 2018 Toyota Camry

The 2018 Toyota Camry can be powered by one of three all-new powertrains starting with the new 2.5-liter, inline four-cylinder engine dubbed Dynamic Force Engine. Thanks to a host of improvements, this engine offers higher torque and more power while also offering world-leading thermal efficiency. This should translate into class-leading fuel economy ratings. This new engine will be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. A 3.5-liter V6 engine with direct injection will also be available as well as a hybrid engine which pairs the four-cylinder with an electric motor.

The new Camry will also feature Toyota’s all-new Safety Sense P suite of active safety technologies, which will be available in every version and trim. That’s right, with the new 2018 Camry, safety will be standard. The new midsize sedan offers the following driver assistance technologies at no extra cost: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA); and Automatic High Beams (AHB). Select models will also come with standard Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).
