2015 Toyota Highlander - The 8-seater

Published on April 28 2015

The 2015 Toyota Highlander is the perfect combination between utility and reliability. Where Toyota’s ages-long reputation for comfort and quality crosses path with a family SUV’s versatility, that’s where you will find the Highlander.

In terms of price, the 2015 Toyota Highlander sits between the smaller RAV4 and the rugged 4Runner. As the reliable big brother of the Toyota lineup it offers a third row of seats and proves to be the perfect family-hauler. The model is new from last year after it received a much needed redesign, which also ended its identity crisis. The Highlander now proudly stands in the three-row SUVs category as one of the best products on the market and a great alternative to the minivan. The new design traded the big-RAV4-look for something more refined and elegant, better suited to its personality.

The 2015 Highlander is advertised as an 8-seater. Seven passengers will probably keep everyone much happier, but know that should you require eight seats for a short trip, the Highlander has you covered. Interior space is versatile and will accommodate family and friends. Cargo volume varies between 390 liters behind the third row of seats to a grand total of 2,370 liters. The SUV also gets you a 5,000-lb towing capacity which certainly adds to the Highlander’s charm.

The interior design is sober and elegant with plenty of storage compartments. Standard equipment on the Highlander varies according to the trim level chosen and includes heated/ventilated seats, wheel-mounted controls, air conditioning, 2 or 3-zone climate control, 6.1-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, heated rear seats, Bluetooth capability, satellite radio, smart key with keyless entry, start button, cruise control, backup camera, and much more.

Safety-wise, Toyota has a well-established reputation and the Highlander is no exception. It benefits from safety features such as the Star Safety System suite that includes, among other technologies, stability control, traction control, brake assist and smart-stop technology. You also get the blind spot monitoring system with rear cross traffic alert, and tire pressure monitoring.

The same powertrain from the previous generation has been carried onto the new one, with a 3.5-liter, 6-cylinder engine that produces 270 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain is teamed with a standard, 6-speed automatic transmission and is available in both a front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive layout. The fuel consumption rating shows a combined average of 11.3L/100km, which isn’t bad given the Highlander’s versatility and overall size. The 2015 Toyota Highlander is also available with a hybrid powertrain, a 3.5L, 6-cylinder hybrid engine that delivers 280 hp and 215 lb-ft of torque which takes the rating down to a combined average of 8.5L/100km.
