2015 Scion FR-S is appealing, and attainable

Published on November 24 2014

''In terms of the interior, the vehicle is not exactly spacious, but it is comfortable, and offers just the right amount of room for the driver – whether he or she is short or 6-feet tall. ''

The Scion FR-S is considered as one of the most charming and attainable vehicles among performance cars sold today. Light and quick, with sleek styling, sharp handling, and a rear-wheel drive system, Scion’s little 2+2 coupe is definitely test-drive worthy, and with a relatively affordable base price, the new 2015 FR-S is even more attractive.

A sub-brand of Toyota, Scion vehicles are meant to appeal to Generation-Y consumers. The FR-S in particular was a result of a collaboration between Scion and Subaru, where they worked to develop what can be considered as this generation’s Datsun 240Z, or Mazda RX-7. Subaru’s version of the coupe is known as the BRZ, although between the two, buyers may find the 2015 Scion FR-S to be more affordable than its rival with regards to the base price. In addition, the new FR-S also gets a retuned suspension, along with a few styling updates for the 2015 model year.

Owners of the 2015 FR-S may find the vehicle to be quite “raw” in terms of the driving experience. Owners may be aware that it is not an overly powerful performance car, but many will appreciate the coupe for its quick and nimble movements, the snarl it makes as the driver revs the engine at a high rpm, and the coupe’s overall ability to handle corners with ease and grace.

If safety is a concern, Scion’s 2015 FR-S coupe has garnered the top 5-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. From the Institute for Highway Safety, it has received the TOP SAFETY PICK, which is among the top ratings a vehicle can achieve. The RWD vehicle includes stability and traction control.

The 2015 Scion FR-S is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine generating 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, and 151 pound-feet of torque between 6,400-6,600 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, and a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters is optional. The coupe also includes a limited slip differential for a better distribution of power and better overall stability.

As for fuel economy, the 2015 FR-S coupe, when equipped with the manual transmission, has a rating of 10.9/7.9 litres per 100 kilometres (city/highway), and a combined rating of 9.6 L/100km. Buyers that opt for the automatic transmission will benefit from a slightly better combined fuel economy rating of 8.4 L/100km.

In terms of the interior, the vehicle is not exactly spacious, but it is comfortable, and offers just the right amount of room for the driver – whether he or she is short or 6-feet tall. Drivers should feel comfortable slipping into the bucket seats without any hassle too, and the low seating position only enhances the fact that you are driving a sporty vehicle. As for the rear seats, they are best used as an extension of the cargo area, but they can also accommodate a child’s seat.

Finally, standard features include, among others, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, keyless entry, cruise control, and a 6.1-inch audio display.

Expect to get noticed in the 2015 Scion FR-S, as its styling and snarl will attract quite a bit of attention, and all in an appreciative way. The new coupe is a worthy consideration for those seeking a fun and sporty 2+2 coupe with an appealing style, decent fuel economy, top safety ratings, rear-wheel drive, and a relatively affordable base price.
